Heading to War
Sunday Evening near Columbus Ohio  April 7th, 1918
My dear mother,
I sent you a card from Chicago this morning.  Our trip so far has been very pleasant-cool and no dust.  Enjoyed the auto ride in Chicago.  Saw Mrs. Potter Palmer's home and Tom Lawson's.  Sent Uncle a telegram.  Arrive in Philadelphia at 12:48 tomorrow, leave at 4 pm, and reach our destination two hours later.
Nurses joined us in Chicago and we are now 45 or 46.  Expect the others are in the east.
Had a short service this afternoon conducted by a Presbyterian chaplain from England who has been spending his furlough here.  He had been stationed at Amiens and was cutting his furlough short to return there.  Feared to find many of his men missing.
Did you all go home last night?
Miss Samuelson's mother met her in Chicago.  Miss S. is from Iowa, but has been in Minneapolis several years doing school nursing.
Have fine meals.  For dinner, chicken pie (didn't compare with yours), Brussels sprouts, sliced tomatoes, boiled onions, mashed potatoes, and ice cream.  For supper ham, potatoes, and sweet pickles.  We pay and later will be reimbursed.  We are allowed $4.50 per day, and all officials are very nice.  Have two special cars.
We stop 20 minutes at Columbus.  I hope to get a walk and mail this.
The porter wants to make up the berth so must stop.
          Love to all, Jane
