Sunday 5:30 June 3rd
Dear Mother,
Have just had a nap and now must write your letter if I go to church tonight. Am planning on hearing Admiral Gleaves at the church of the Ascension. It has been so hot today. I wonder if the heat wave of the last few days has come from you. I hope the corn is getting it in sufficient degrees. Thought it too warm for Grace Chruch this morning so went to Brooklyn to see Miss Newboldt instead. She came back with me and after lunch we took the trip on the ferry down the river and saw the same boats as were in the other day. I believe ex-president Taft was on the ferry, at least it looked like him.
Miss N. took the enclosed snaps the first time she came over.
Yesterday morning nine of us went over to Brooklyn Navy yard, and were taken over the hospital ship Comfort. It is wonderfully equipped. It has cots for 350, but with its chairs it could accommodate nearly a thousand. Has the most up to date operating rooms, dressing rooms, x-rays, etc. No women nurses. It has been in a southern port and had patients on it.
We were paid this afternoon and as they kept out our allotment, you will get it soon.
Charlie Eaton assured me last June the company would carry all nurses already insured but would insert a war clause in the new policies otherwise I would have dropped it last summer. I hope Penn. Mutual does not do likewise.
Last evening five of us Billie Burke in 'A Marriage of Convenience.' Very light.
Thursday and Friday were very cool. Attended Grace Church Thursday morning and in the afternoon Miss N. came over and we took the ferry down the river. In the evening saw a very good play, "In the Eyes of Youth." Friday afternoon I went up 5th Ave. as far as 57th St.
You have Alice with you today and in another week Frances will be home.
Heard today of the safe arrival on the other side of Unit 13 from Chicago. They marched with us in the Parade.
How disheartening the war news is. Is it possible the Germans can take Paris> If only we had our army over there!
Haven't heard from Ardmore this week so I think they have not heard from Joe Mosser.
Hope you have decided to go to Minneapolis this month. How is the strawberry bed? Such lovely berries in the market here.
Now do not worry about me. I am feeling fine and believe I shall escape seasickness this time. Love to all, Jane.
