Letter No. 13 France Thursday Au 29th, 1918
My dear Family,
Alice's letter of July 24th arrived today also one from Alfred. He evidently had not received the one I sent to his company. Wouldn't be surprised if mine from Blois No. 3 and 4 went down on the White Star boat. Received another from Post this week from Mrs. Pearce and two magazines from Uncle Harry.
It has been much cooler since our rain last Friday and Saturday. Sunday afternoon Miss Reid and I took a long bicycle ride 10 or 12 miles. It is such fun to have them. They are English bicycles, free wheels with brakes on the handlebars and very easy to manage if you remember to use the brakes. We have had one accident, the dietician fell spraining both ankles. Tuesday during my hours off I rode to V------ to do a little shopping, mostly thins for the ward. One of our convalescents is a good carpenter and we are making good use of him.
Two more Red Cross trains have been in this week but most of the patients were convalescents and went to the other units here. We are not busy in the ward I am in.
So Tom McDonald is married! I sent William two copies of the Stars and Stripes this morning. Thought you would be interested in the official organ of the A E F. Have heard nothing about the mail we write being limited. If they have such difficulty getting ballast for our boats on the return journey should not think they would object to mail. They are more likely to limit that sent to us.
The nurses have good meals since one of the chefs from Minneapolis is in our kitchen. Have just had lunch-soup, stew of meat and potato, canned peas, white bread, canned cherries, and raspberry jam.
A YMCA worker is visiting us. Don't know just what her line is-recreation I have heard.
Our hospital equipment has arrived and is being unpacked. Hope to have a day off soon and ride to Beaune ten miles NE of here. I hope tomorrow brings a big US mail.
Love to all, Jane
PS You will notice that our address and our modes of addressing our envelopes to you change frequently.
